Strokes are not always easy to identify, particularly for the novice or a layman. But there are three things doctors recommend that can be helpful in identifying someone who has just suffered a stroke. Your quick action can save someone from suffering severe brain damage and may even save someone’s life.

You need to take immediate action!
- First. Tell the patient to blink his eyes or smile.
- Second. Tell the patient to say something, have them speak a sentence or two or tell you their name and address. Look for a coherent reply.Third. Ask the patient to raise both arms.
- Fourth. Tell the patient to stick out his tongue. The tongue has to be strait, not crooked or pointing to one side or the other, which can also be an indication of a stroke.
If the patient has difficulty performing any of these simple tasks call 911 immediately. Tell the emergency operator you believe the patient has had a stroke and describe his symptoms.
